About Florida Cities
With more than 400 cities, towns, and villages in the state of Florida, these communities are as diverse in geography, population, and culture as the residents who call them home. Florida’s cities, towns, and villages are the centers of economic, social, and cultural energy for residents. Municipalities are corporations created in response to residents’ desire for local control and increased, better-quality services.
Cities are citizen-driven representative democracies. Through community engagement and input, citizens determine the services provided by their city. It wasn’t always this way. More than 50 years ago, Floridians voted to include municipal Home Rule powers in the Constitution. Home Rule allows each city to craft its laws specifically to its unique needs. This is the embodiment of local voices making local choices.
