International Relations Success Story
The City of Tarpon Springs
The Honorable Apostolos "Akis" Tsohatzopoulos was the keynote speaker at the American Foundation for Greek Languages and Cultures Forum at the University of South Florida in March 2002. He is the Minister of Development of Greece and requested a visit to Tarpon Springs. Prior to his present position, he served as Minister of Defense. As Minister of Development he is responsible for the following ministries: Industry, Commerce/Trade, Research & Technology, Consumer, and Hellenic Tourist Organization.

He was greeted by Mayor Pro Tempore Beverley Billiris, Commissioner Jim Archer, County Commissioner Karen Seel, and representatives from the community Geroge Billiris, Jim and Nick Skaroulis, Pat McGarr from the Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce, as well as representatives from the Kalymnian Society.

Minister Akis was given a tour of the City of Tarpon Springs which highlighted the famous sponge docks. He donned a diving helmet, toured a commercial sponge warehouse to watch the sponge cleaning process in action, and enjoyed lunch at Mama's Greek Cuisine Restaurant.

He was delighted by the strong Greek culture than still remains in Tarpon Springs, particularly the strong interest in the sponge industry future. His visit was limited due to other commitments, but he was so taken by our city's hospitality he promised to return for the city's Epiphany event.
