Coral Gables Mayor Receives International Citizen of the Year Award Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick was recently honored with the 2008 Miami-Dade County International Citizen of the Year Award presented by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez.
Slesnick was selected by the Sister Cities Coordinating Council for numerous contributions to promote international goodwill in Miami-Dade County. In his speech, Mayor Slesnick thanked the private sector for supporting the development of international relations in this community.
During his tenure as Mayor of Coral Gables, Slesnick has been a strong proponent of fostering international ties with other regions through the City’s Sister Cities program with Aix-en-Provence, France; Cartagena, Colombia; Granada, Spain; La Antigua, Guatemala; Province of Pisa, Italy; and Quito, Ecuador.
Issue Paper: Global Solutions for Transportation Efficiency Congestion is a severe problem that is only going to get worse in the coming years. The 2007 Urban Mobility Report, prepared by the Texas Transportation Institute, concludes that traffic congestion deprives the national economy of $78 billion every year through 4.2 billion wasted hours and 2.9 billion gallons of fuel. Congestion lowers productivity, increases air pollution, and aggravates residents.
Enterprise Florida Trade Missions Enterprise Florida promotes the state as a business destination at a number of domestic and international trade shows throughout the year. Additionally, they sponsor a number of events and conferences, as well as host consultant events and international trade missions to encourage business development opportunities.

Hollywood on a Global Pace In July 2006, the City of Hollywood hosted a nine-member delegation from the City of Sanya, Hainan Province, China. The group was headed by Sanya’s Mayor Lu Zhiyuan. It also included municipal and private-sector officials. During their stay, members of the delegation participated in the city’s July 4th celebrations and met with Mayor Mara Giulianti and city staff to discuss the functioning of Hollywood Beach’s Community Redevelopment Agency. An Update on Philippine Environmental Projects, November 2006 United States Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney went to Puerto Princesa last November 3 to visit the U.S.-assisted projects in the city. Among these projects is the technical assistance extended by the United States-Asia Environmental Partnership (USAEP) when Puerto Princesa City established its Clean Air Program in 2004. "Getting to Know Europe" Grant Competition The Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, D.C., has launched the "Getting to Know Europe" grant competition for activities that encourage greater understanding of the European Union among local communities in the U.S. and the many ties between the United States and the European Union. Activities can include competitions, publications and other information products; training and briefing sessions; study and exchange visits; and town-twinning arrangements.
