Shared Fire and EMS Station 83 City of DeLand The City of DeLand and the countywide emergency medical services (EMS) provider, partnered to construct a new fire/EMS station to serve the citizens of the southwest portion of the city and surrounding county area. The city contracted for the building of the station and the EMS company supplied information on its needs and finances to purchase the sole use of a one-engine bay and approximately 1,000 square feet of office space. This is the second joint venture between DeLand and the EMS company aimed at better providing citizens with quick professional emergency response to fire and EMS incidents. Refurbished Truck Saves Money City of Melbourne The City of Melbourne’s ability to fight brush fires has been increased thanks to an old military surplus truck. The Fleet Management Division completely refurbished the truck over a two-month period. This six-wheel-drive brush truck, built for off-road use and capable of going through water, was purchased for $3,500. City mechanics refurbished the fuel system, brakes and wiring, and added firefighting equipment. The final price with all the improvements was $29,493. The same truck purchased new would have cost $39,000. Contact: Jennifer G. Self-Inspection for Palm Bay Businesses City of Palm Bay One of the functions of the Palm Bay Fire Department Prevention Division is to conduct fire and life-safety inspections in all commercial occupancies. The Fire Department’s goal is to periodically visit each business in the city. A “self-inspection checklist” was created to give the business operators flexibility to conduct a safety survey at their convenience, reducing the number of non-compliant items that may be noted during their fire and life-safety inspection. Palm Bay Fire Rescue works with the business operator when potential hazards are identified, and provides corrective action information. Firefighters also conduct fire pre-plans of businesses. Items included in the fire pre-plan assist Palm Bay Fire Rescue to identify the layout of the building, building construction and locations of important records or materials, utility shut-offs and the nearest fire hydrant. A completed, signed and dated checklist is sent to the Fire Prevention Bureau for the fire inspector to use on facility visits. Community Life Saving City of Tallahassee The City of Tallahassee has placed automated external defibrillators (AEDs) throughout city offices in strategic locations for use in case of a sudden cardiac arrest event. Additionally, CPR and AED training is provided by the Tallahassee Fire Department to every ninth grader in the local public school system. As a result, the American Heart Association has awarded the “Heart Ready” designation to the Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD). It is a goal of the TFD to decrease the mortality rate associated with cardiac arrest. Contact: Cindy Dick, Fire Chief Tallahassee Fire Department City of Tallahassee 327 N.
