Did
you know the Florida Caverns State Park is just outside the City
of Marianna?
Located along the Chipola River three miles north of Marianna, Florida
Caverns is one of only a few state parks containing dry, or air-filled,
caves. It is the only state park in Florida to allow public cave
tours. Added to the state park system in 1935, Florida Caverns hosted
almost 95,000 visitors in 2004 and brought nearly $3.5 million into
the Jackson County economy. This accomplishment led to the park
being honored as the first recipient of the Wayne Mixson Economic
Development Award in January 2005. Jackson County was Florida's
third county and was established in 1822. The City of Marianna was
founded in 1827 and is the county seat.
