Did
you know the Town of Lake Placid is the "Caladium Capital of
the World"?
Lake Placid produces more than 90 percent of the world's caladiums
- a colorful plant used both indoors and outdoors. The majority
of Lake Placid's caladiums are grown in 1,500 acres of "black
lake bottom muck" south of Lake Istokpoga on County Road 621.
The caladium bulbs are shipped throughout the U.S., as well as to
South Africa, Turkey, Spain, Pakistan and Europe. The Town of Lake
Placid holds an annual Caladium Festival on the last weekend in
August. The 2002 festival had an attendance of more than 25,000
people.
