Did You Know... Blountstown |
|
Did you know the City of Blountstown was named for a great Seminole Indian?
Blountstown was named for John Blount, a Seminole who became chief of the Indians living on the reservation just east of the settlement. The Anglo-American name was given to him in deference to the fact he shared many traits with Superintendent of Indian Affairs William Blount.
In October 1832, when the reservation was ceded by treaty to the United States, John Blount led an expedition of Seminoles to the new reservation west of the Mississippi River. He later led the group to live in the new territory. The first white settlers named the city in his honor.
