abcs_logo

During the 1997 Legislative Session, Florida lawmakers amended Section 233.061, Florida Statutes, to read as follows:

Required instruction.—
(1) Members of the instructional staff of the public schools … shall teach … the following:
(e) The elements of civil government shall include the primary functions of and inter-relationships between the Federal Government, the state, and its counties, municipalities, school districts, and special districts.

The Florida League of Cities is pleased to provide this curriculum supplement, The ABCs of City Government, to assist educators in meeting this state requirement.

Other educational resources available through the League include:
My City — I’m Part of It, I’m Proud of It! – This publication is a model program promoting active citizenship to Florida students. It includes five lessons and activities about city government. Click here for more information.
"Getting to Know Your Florida Cities" Training DVD – This training tool was developed to help citizens, the media, civic organizations, schools and others learn more about municipal governments in the Sunshine State. Click here to view the text of the DVD chapters or e-mail the Public Affairs staff to obtain a copy.

General technical assistance/referrals regarding city government information are also available through the League. For more information, please e-mail the Membership Development Department.
