  • January 12, 2009: Cities Reach Property Tax Reduction Goals

  • Data released by the Florida Department of Revenue has confirmed that Florida’s cities have met the property tax reduction goals for FY 2008-2009. The data compiled by the department, which includes the adopted property tax rates for 397 of Florida’s 411 cities, shows that on the whole, Florida’s cities have essentially met the property tax reduction goals mandated by the Legislature for city budgets approved by a simple majority vote.

  • December 8, 2008: St. Lucie West Services District Employee Found Guilty for Insurance Fraud and Grand Theft

  • Concetta Marie Prianti, a garbage collector for the St. Lucie West Services District, was found guilty on two counts of workers’ compensation fraud and grand theft. Prianti was sentenced to six months in jail, 10 years probation and ordered to repay over $37,000 in restitution.

  • November 20, 2008: Florida League of Cities Joins Graham and Frey in Support for Civics Education

  • The Florida League of Cities joined with former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham and former Congressman Lou Frey to deliver a significant donation to promote civics education in Florida schools and communities.

  • Wellington Vice-Mayor Carmine Priore kicked off his one-year term as president of the Florida League of Cities (FLC) with a civic education challenge to city officials statewide. He was formally installed last weekend during the organization’s 82nd annual business meeting and educational conference.

  • May 13, 2008: Florida Cities Join Municipalities Across the Nation in Urging U.S. Senate to Reject Legislation that Federalizes Local Collective Bargaining Process

  • Today, the United States Senate is considering H.R. 980 — the ill-named Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act. This proposal, if passed, would federalize collective bargaining — historically a state and local responsibility. Cities around the nation oppose this legislation because decisions about collective bargaining requirements should be left to state and local elected officials who represent their constituents and reflect their values and opinions.

  • April 24, 2008: Mayors Visit Capitol to Protect Local Citizens from State Mandates

  • The Florida League of Mayors (FLM), led by their president, Mayor Steve Feren of the City of Sunrise, spent today at the Capitol to speak with lawmakers about their concerns regarding several legislative proposals that threaten to strip local citizens of their authority and impose huge unfunded mandates that dictate the choices of local communities.

  • April 1, 2008: City of Coral Springs Wins Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award

  • The City of Coral Springs is the first local government in the nation to receive the coveted Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, a presidential honor that recognizes U.S. companies for organizational performance excellence.
