TALLAHASSEE – Florida League of Cities (FLC) President Frank C. Ortis, mayor of Pembroke Pines, was elected to the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities (NLC) – a post that puts him on the governing body of a powerful national organization, representing more than 19,000 American cities, towns and villages.

Leaders from cities and state municipal leagues – meeting at the National League of Cities Congress of Cities in New Orleans, La., last week – voted to elect the South Florida mayor to this prestigious position. Mayor Ortis will serve a two-year term as part of a nearly 50-member board.

“Now, more than ever, our citizens need to feel their local leaders are listening to them and working in their best interest,” said Ortis. “My experiences as a Pembroke Pines commissioner and mayor, as well as my national, state and local league involvement, have provided an unparalleled opportunity to understand the diverse needs of cities and prepare me for service at the national level.”

The National League of Cities is the country’s oldest and largest organization serving municipal governments. In addition to advocating on behalf of America’s cities, NLC also represents state municipal leagues, including the Florida League of Cities, which has the largest number of member cities in NLC. Members share information about improving services to citizens, and they work with state and federal leaders to solve problems within cities. NLC board members are frequently included in presidential, congressional and other national forums to represent the urban and municipal perspective.

Mayor of Pembroke Pines since 2004, Ortis has, among other things, served on the Florida League of Cities' Executive Committee and Board of Directors, Federal Action Strike Team and on several trusts. He also has served as chair of the National League of Cities Steering Committee on Information, Technology and Communications. Leader of a nationally designated All-America City, in 2006, he received the Florida Cities of Excellence Award for Mayor of the Year.

“I have worked well with our congressional delegation and am excited about the opportunity to impact congressional members even more as a member of the NLC Board of Directors,” said Ortis.
