TALLAHASSEE - The City of Coral Springs is the first local government in the nation to receive the coveted Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, a presidential honor that recognizes U.S. companies for organizational performance excellence. This is the first year non-profit organizations could apply for the award. Of 84 applicants, Coral Springs was one of 13 nonprofits to apply and one of only four to receive a site visit in its category. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. later this year.

“We're proud to be the recipient of this prestigious award. We're even prouder of the business improvements and results that earned us this unique distinction," said Coral Springs City Manager Michael Levinson. "The entire community benefits when local government is able to deliver goods and services to its customers in the most responsive and responsible way."

Congress established the Malcolm Baldrige program in 1987 to raise awareness about quality management and recognize U.S. companies with world-class systems for managing their operations as top role models. Principal support for the program comes from the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The award is named for Malcolm Baldrige, who served as secretary of commerce from 1981 until his tragic death in a rodeo accident in 1987. His managerial excellence contributed to long-term improvement in efficiency and effectiveness of government.

Coral Springs underwent a rigorous evaluation by the board of nine examiners, who spent a week with Coral Springs staff members in October 2007. During their stay, examiners saw the city’s processes and compared them to the application and the following seven criteria: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, measurement and analysis, human resource focus, process management and results.

In addition to the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the City of Coral Springs has received other recognitions for excellence: 100 Best Communities for Young People by America’s Promise in 2006 and 2007; ranked the Best Place to Live in Florida by Money Magazine in 2006; honored as the first City of Excellence by the Florida League of Cities in 2004; the first two-time winner of the Florida Governor’s Sterling Award for Organizational Performance Excellence in 1997 and 2003, and honored with Wall Street’s highest distinction — three AAA credit ratings.
