TALLAHASSEE – The Florida League of Cities hosted the fourth annual Florida Cities of Excellence Awards – an awards program designed to highlight the wonderful and valuable services cities provide to improve the quality of life in Florida and to honor outstanding city leaders and cities for their excellent, innovative and highly praised programs.
The winners were announced and recognized for their unparalleled commitment to public service Friday, November 9, during a luncheon held at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport Hotel. All winners received a “MUNI” award and will be featured in the League’s award-winning publication, Quality Cities.
“The winners in these categories provide exemplary service for their cities and should be applauded for this wonderful accomplishment,” said Frank C. Ortis, Florida League of Cities president and City of Pembroke Pines mayor. “It is truly an honor and a privilege to salute such outstanding public servants in this celebration of dedication, innovation and public service known as Florida Cities of Excellence Awards!”
The winners in the 10 categories include:
Florida City of Excellence City of Port Orange
Mayor of the Year Mayor Mike Anderson, Fort Walton Beach
City Attorney of the Year Anthony Garganese, Cocoa and Winter Springs
City Citizen of the Year Nadine McCrea, Hollywood
City Clerk of the Year Tammy Vock, Vero Beach
City Employee of the Year Aner Gonzalez, Pembroke Pines
City Manager of the Year Kenneth W. Parker, Port Orange
City Spirit Award Tarpon Springs' Affordable Housing Partnership
Council Member of the Year Hon. Mary Lawson Brown, Palatka
Finance Official of the Year Margaret "Margie" Simmons, Clearwater
Requirements included a complete narrative essay and supportive information for the specific category—such as newspaper clippings, photos, letters from constituents, etc.
