I Am a... Teacher

During the 1997 Legislative Session, Florida lawmakers amended Section 233.061, Florida Statutes, to read as follows:
Required instruction. — (1) Members of the instructional staff of the public schools … shall teach … the following: (e) The elements of civil government shall include the primary functions of and inter-relationships between the Federal Government, the state, and its counties, municipalities, school districts, and special districts.
Florida League of Cities President Carmine Priore has made civic education the focus of his year in office. The League has developed educational publications and projects that will assist teachers with meeting state requirements and help to increase their students’ understanding of city government functions and services. An annual event held in October that serves to highlight the crucial role
played by city government in the lives of its residents. The week provides
a special time to teach about municipal government issues and to develop
