Firefighter Cancer Benefits Talking Points

Florida’s cities appreciate the service firefighters provide to our communities.

However, the Florida League of Cities oppose SB 900 and HB 695 as the bills are a significant unfunded state mandate.

State mandated benefits will have considerable increases in the cost to taxpayers for health insurance and disability pension benefits.

SB 900 and HB 695 include any cancer diagnoses even though there are inconsistent outcomes in the medical research.

The language is so broad that such a wide array of illnesses or illness categories could trigger extra payments even though those illnesses were unrelated to the job.

Current law provides firefighters and law enforcement officers, with special protections for occupational or other specified diseases.

SB 900 and HB 695 will create a significant financial burden to Florida’s cities, towns and villages.
